Super Channel acquires U.K. series Gap Year

The deal was inked between Super Channel and eOne, which holds the international rights to the eight-part show.

gap year picSuper Channel has acquired the Canadian TV rights to the hour-long U.K. comedy drama, Gap Year.

The eight-part series is set to make its Canadian broadcast premiere on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 9 p.m. New episodes will also be available on Super Channel On Demand the day after they air on linear.

Gap Year is produced by London, U.K.-based prodco Eleven and eOne (through its U.K.-based production business). The deal was inked between Super Channel and eOne, which holds the international rights to the series.

The show stars Ade Oyefeso, Anders Hayward, Tim Key, Alice Lee and Brittney Wilson as a group of travellers who meet in Beijing for the first leg of their post-high school trip. But soon find that their journey takes them much further than any of them ever expected.

Created by Tom Basden (Fresh Meat), the series is also written by James Wood (Rev), Loren McLaughlan (Shameless), Amy Roberts (Shameless), Sam Leifer (Plebs), Charlie Covell (Banana), Tim Key (Alan Partridge) and Jonny Sweet (Together).

On the acquisition front, Super Channel most recently acquired the rights to MGM Television’s dark comedy Get Shorty and Lionsgate Television’s half-hour dramedy Gravesas well as the spy drama Berlin Station, produced by Paramount Television and Anonymous Content for U.S. network EPIX.

Last month, the company announced that it had elevated long-time exec Donald McDonald to president and CEO. Super Channel’s parent company Allarco remains in creditor protection, following a CCAA filing in summer 2016.
