Corner Gas, which debuted Jan. 22 to 1.15 million viewers, is proving to be a big success for CTV, with subsequent episodes still breaking the million-viewer mark.
In light of the premiere’s success, CTV decided to air the second episode twice, Jan. 27 and 29, bringing its weekly total to over two million, according to Nielsen Media Research numbers. The third episode of the half-hour comedy from series creator and star Brent Butt aired Feb. 4 in the show’s new timeslot, Wednesdays at 8 p.m., attracting 1.12 million viewers.
The second season of Puppets Who Kill premiered on The Comedy Network Jan. 30 to 38,000 viewers, with 40,000 tuning in for the second episode. While the show’s per-episode budget nearly doubled in its second season, its ratings have dropped slightly. At its very best, the first season of Puppets drew around 100,000 viewers.
CBC’s new dramatic series, This Is Wonderland, attracted 386,000 viewers on Feb. 2, down from 554,000 the previous week. But in an effort to build an audience, CBC aired back-to-back episodes of Wonderland Sunday Feb. 8 and 9, attracting 527,000 and 450,000 viewers respectively. These numbers are in keeping with those of veteran CBC drama Da Vinci’s Inquest, which brought in 600,000 viewers when it aired after Wonderland on Feb. 8 and 541,000 the week previous.
As for the rest of CBC’s Monday night lineup, Rick Mercer’s Monday Report ratings are fairly consistent, with 731,000 viewers tuning in on Feb. 2 and 720,000 the following week. The numbers for Ken Finkleman’s The Newsroom, however, are dropping week by week. After premiering to over 500,000 viewers Jan. 12, the audience dropped to 364,000 in its second week, 322,000 for the third episode and dipped again to 240,000 Feb. 9.
Meanwhile, there’s a lot riding on the Feb. 15 premiere of CTV drama series The Eleventh Hour. Given the proximity of the show’s premiere to funding application deadlines, CTV says ratings over the next two weeks (three in a pinch) will determine if the broadcaster will go ahead with another season of last year’s Genie winner for best dramatic series. CTV remains undecided as to when it will start airing the new season of its other drama series Cold Squad.
