Robert Rabinovitch is set to run CBC as its president for another three years, following a Nov. 4 recommendation from Prime Minister Paul Martin that extends what had been a five-year contract into 2007.
‘Mr. Rabinovitch is well-known for his outstanding career achievements in both the public and private sectors, and for his long-standing commitment to Canada’s cultural industry. He is admired and respected by his peers, and I am very pleased that he has agreed to continue his work at the CBC,’ said Martin.
Rabinovitch’s term was set to expire on Nov. 15, but rumors had swirled that he would be re-upped for a short period. His tenure has been generally smooth, but the Liberals have been under fire lately for what appear to be patronage appointments at the pubcaster. Several of the Ceeb’s board of directors are friends of the Liberal Party and Rabinovitch was once deputy minister of communications under Pierre Trudeau.
Martin’s recommendation is still subject to review by the House’s Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage, which will make its own recommendation to cabinet. Martin appeared before the committee on Nov. 15.
