Gulîstan, Land of Roses from writer/director Zaynê Akyol has been named to the lineup for the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM)
The feature-length Canada/Germany copro was produced by Montreal-based Périphéria, German prodco Mîtosfilm and the National Film Board. Gulistan follows a group of Kurdish female fighters who wage war on ISIS on the Iraqi and Syrian border.
The film was one of five documentaries added, with Robert Greene’s Kate Plays Christine (U.S.), Eryk Rocha’s Cinema Novo (Brazil), Wang Bing’s Ta’ang (China) and Aslaug Holm’s Brothers (Norway) also named to the RIDM lineup.
Gulistan made its world premiere in the Canadian Spectrum competition program at Hot Docs 2016. Earlier this week the doc won the Doc Alliance Selection Award, which was presented at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland.
The doc was produced by Sarah Mannering, Fanny Drew and Yanick Létourneau of Périphéria, as well as Mîtosfilm’s Mehmet Aktaş, and Nathalie Cloutier and Denis McCready of the NFB. Gulistan is executive produced by Aktaş and Colette Loumède and distributed by the NFB.
RIDM 2016, the festival’s 19th edition, runs from Nov. 10 to 20.
