Cameras are rolling in Toronto on season two of tween drama Backstage, with 30 new episodes set to begin airing in 2017.
Seven new cast members have been added for the new season, including Joshua Kilimnik (Odd Squad, Bruno & Boots: Go Jump in the Pool), Stephanie La Rochelle (Heartland), Sydney Kuhne (Dino Dan) and Thomas L. Colford (Center Stage: On Pointe).
DHX’s Family Channel announced the season two greenlight in May 2016. The show was also licensed to Disney Channel in 15 territories (including the U.S., U.K., France, Spain, Italy and Portugal) in February of this year.
The series, which is set at the fictional Keaton School for the Arts, will also see existing cast Josh Bogert, Aviva Mongillo, Mckenzie Small, Devyn Nekoda, Alyssa Trask, Colin Petierre, Matthew Isen, Julia Tomasone, Romy Weltman, Kyal Legend and Adrianna Di Liello returning for the second season.
Backstage was created by Toronto’s Fresh TV and was commissioned by DHX Television. Executive producers on the series are Brian Irving, who also serves as producer; Lara Azzopardi, the series’ co-creator, showrunner, writer and director; Jennifer Pertsch, also co-creator; Tom McGillis and George Elliott.
The first half of the show’s inaugural season recently finished airing on Family Channel, with the remaining half expected to air later this year. No air date has yet been set for the second block of episodes.
Directors on this season of the series include Director X, Randall “RT!” Thorne, Wendy Morgan, Warren Sonoda and Lara Azzopardi, who all directed episodes season one as well.
