Shaftesbury/Smokebomb launches Inhuman Condition

The first six episodes of the 33-part supernatural drama (pictured) were released on the KindaTV YouTube channel earlier this week.

Shaftesbury/Smokebomb has launched its latest web series, Inhuman Condition, via its YouTube channel KindaTV.

Released on Monday, the supernatural drama is a 33-part web series shot at Hangloose Media’s studio in Toronto last October. The first six episodes went live on the same day, with three episodes being released each week (on Monday, Wednesday and Friday) for the remainder of the season. Each episode is between five and eight minutes in length.

Initially planned as an eight-episode project, Smokebomb and Shaftesbury began developing Inhuman Condition almost three years ago. However, as Smokebomb’s strategy for web series evolved with shows such as Carmilla (36 episodes per season) and V Morgan is Dead (20 episodes), the company found that increasing the number of episodes also increased fan engagement. “You need a long enough runway to engage an audience,” Smokebomb/Shaftesbury’s SVP of creative and innovation, Jay Bennett, told Playback Daily. As such, the decision was made to extend the series to over 30 episodes.

Created and written by RJ Lackie (All 4 One), the millennial-female-skewing series follows a therapist, Dr. Michelle Kessler, who specializes in providing support to people with superhuman abilities. Inhuman Condition is produced by Steph Ouaknine, Melanie Windle and Jay Bennett and executive produced by Christina Jennings and Scott Garvie. All episodes are directed by Jared Pelletier (Omega, Call of Duty: Final Hour).

The series stars Torri Higginson (This LifeStargate: Atlantis), Cara Gee (Strange Empire), Robin Dunne (Sanctuary), Thomas Olajide (King Lear) and Clara Pasieka (Maps to the StarsReign).

YouTube channel KindaTV is owned by shift2, which is in turn owned by Youth Culture, Shaftesbury and Smokebomb. The channel was formerly known as Vervegirl TV, before the channel was rebranded in March 2016.
