Doyle renewed, Border cancelled

The Newfoundland-based dramedy Republic of Doyle will return to the CBC for a second season.

CBC is, however, jettisoning The Border after three seasons, and denying a series pickup to the Tangled pilot from Shaftesbury Films.

White Pine Pictures’ The Border will fall off the grid as Republic of Doyle grabs the CBC’s last available

9 p.m. drama timeslot. The Ron James Show has been renewed and both the Men with Brooms sitcom from E1 Television and Serendipity Point Films and the Virginia Thompson-created comedy Insecurity from Vérité Films earned series pickups.

The end of The Border also means Vancouver’s Grace Park, who played a U.S. homeland security agent on the homegrown drama, can make a clean transition to CBS’ Hawaii Five-O remake, where she’s being cast as Kono Kalakaulau, the niece of squad member Chin Ho Kelly.

Republic of Doyle, from series creator Allan Hawco and Take the Shot Productions, debuted on Jan. 6, airing Wednesdays at 9 p.m.
