Canada/Ireland copro Room has bested fellow nominees Sleeping Giant and The Forbidden Room to claim the Vancouver Film Critics Circle’s best Canadian film prize.

Room also won Emma Donoghue the best screenplay for a Canadian film award, with the film’s leads Jacob Tremblay and Brie Larson picking up the best actor and actress prizes, respectively. Room is produced by Element Pictures and No Trace Camping and is distributed in Canada by Elevation Pictures.

In the best director category, Andrew Cividino (Sleeping Giant) claimed the award ahead of Lenny Abrahamson (Room) and Atom Egoyan (Remember), with Cividino winning the best first feature award as well for the coming-of-age drama.

The best Canadian doc prize went to Haida Gwaii: On the Edge of the World, while Tara Pratt (No Men Beyond This Point) won best supporting actress and Nick Serino (Sleeping Giant) was named best supporting actor.

Haida Gwaii also won the best B.C. film award and the documentary’s director Charles Wilkinson took the prize for the best director of a B.C. film.

In the night’s other award, Gabrielle Rose received the Ian Caddell Award for Achievement, which is given to a British Columbian who has contributed significantly to the province’s film industry. The honour is named after VFCC’s co-founder Caddell, who passed away in 2012.
