Atom Egoyan will be at the University of Toronto this fall – teaching a course about the crossover between film, music and other creative disciplines.

‘It’s about looking at, say, Stanley Kubrick’s use of classical music or the way Oscar Wilde’s play Salome has been adapted into opera,’ says Egoyan. ‘It’s looking at how different artists use the different media.’

The undergrad class – called Transgressions: An Approach to Interdisciplinary Practice – is part of a three-year stint at the faculty of arts and sciences for the noted filmmaker and U of T alum. Egoyan will also advise graduate and undergraduate students and deliver a series of public lectures.

‘I’m seeing how it works out,’ he says, noting that the university has been ‘very understanding’ about his schedule.

Egoyan is no stranger to the broader arts world. He has directed operas including Salome and Wagner’s Die Walküre for the Canadian Opera Company and shown artwork in London, Montreal and France.

‘I’m really excited about the possibilities of disciplines interacting with each other,’ he adds. ‘It’s all interrelated.’
