The Ireland/Canada drama Room opened strong in the U.S., posting the highest per-location average of any film in theatres over the Oct. 16 weekend.

Room appeared on four screens in New York and Los Angeles over the Oct. 16 to Oct. 18 weekend, earning a per-location average of nearly $30,000. Cumulatively, Room brought in $118,298 at the box office over its opening weekend. Its per-location average box office performance beat out Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs biopic, which had an average of $25, 212 across 60 locations.

A24 holds the U.S. distribution rights to Room. Elevation Pictures distributes the film in Canada, and will release the picture theatrically north of the border on Oct. 23. The film will screen exclusively at the Varsity theatre in Toronto before it rolls out into other markets, Elevation’s Naveen Prasad told Playback.

Room has also had a successful run on the festival circuit, winning audience awards at the Toronto International Film Festival, the Vancouver International Film Festival and the Aspen Filmfest.

Room is directed by Lenny Abrahamson, and is based on a book written by Irish-Canadian author Emma Donoghue, who also penned the screenplay. Element Pictures and No Trace Camping are the prodcos attached to the project, with Ed Guiney and David Gross producing. Executive producers are Andrew Lowe, Jesse Shapira, Jeff Arkuss, David Kosse, Rose Garnett, Tessa Ross and Donoghue.
