Newen acquires majority stake in Johnson Production Group

The Vancouver-headquartered company produces about 40 movies a year for broadcast television and streaming.

Newen Studios has inked a deal to acquire a majority stake in Vancouver-headquartered Johnson Production Group (JPG).

Newen, owned by French media company TF1 Group, said in a statement that the investment in JPG is part of its strategy to develop and acquire global IP. This acquisition expands the company’s North American footprint following the majority stake it acquired in Reel One in 2019.

JPG, which has offices in Los Angeles as well as Vancouver, handles the financing, production and distribution of more than 3,000 hours of network television, with over $1 billion spent on production on such movies as Christmas at Pemberley ManorLove on the SlopesFalling in Niagara and Hotwired in Suburbia.

Company founder Timothy O. Johnson will continue to lead JPG, which he created in 1992.

“The signing of the agreement for the acquisition marks a new step in the Group’s development and its international expansion. With Reel One and now JPG, we are becoming one of the world leaders in the production and distribution of TV movies while strengthening our privileged access to the North American market,” said Pierre Branco, CEO of Newen Studios, in a statement.

Added Johnson: “This will enable JPG and its partners to super service its clients delivering the best TV movies worldwide with the solid support of financing, distribution and massive scale Newen provides.”
