La Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC) has supported eight initiatives meant to enhance Quebec’s cinematic experience or make it more accessible to audiences.
The projects, all at the development phase, were among 20 initiatives submitted to SODEC after a call for submissions. The expectation is that these initiatives will be deployed in 2024 and 2025.
The initiatives look at an array of options, including public screenings, educational programs, and direct support for Quebec filmmakers. For instance, prodcos Art et essai and Le Foyer Films have proposed the creation of a lab to help creators of Quebec feature films find their target audience at the development stage.
Immersive production company Hubblo has proposed a virtual reality tour of Quebec films, to attract new viewers to local cinema, while the cooperative Tënk Canada is in the works on a documentary week to make Quebec docs available to public libraries for screenings.
L’Association des cinémas parallèles du Québec is developing a national initiative to disseminate Quebec cinema, working with ACPQ (the Association of Private Colleges of Quebec) to organize screenings that include live discussions and readings.
Le Festival international du film pour enfants de Montréal has proposed the project Cinescapade, which is meant to make cinema more inclusive and accessible to younger viewers by setting up screenings at hospitals or other specialized settings.
