SODEC selects 18 films for development support

The projects include seven documentaries, 10 fiction features and one animation.

La Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC) has announced development financing for 18 films.

Seven documentaries, 10 fiction features and an animation prototype were selected from 83 total applications for SODEC’s development assistance program.

The scripted feature films selected include 9 bipeds (Productions Kinesis), written by Robert Morin; Arilala (Les Films du Paria), by André Forcier and Linda Pinet; Em (Rodeo FX Originals), by Valérie Beaugrand-Champagne and Florence Lafond; Even in Darkness (Art et essai), by Carmine Pierre-Dufour; and Felicity (A Media), by India Desjardins.

Rounding out the features is The Star Fairy (Max Films), written by Lyne Charlebois and Sylvie Moreau; Agent Jean – The Movie (Happy Camper Media), by Robin Balzano and Alexandre Couture; Penances (Productions Casablanca), by Emmanuelle Gilbert, Rafaël Ouellet and Alex Viens; and We May Be Gone (Les Films Band With Pictures), by Matthew McInerney-Lacombe.

SODEC has also provided funding to support rewrites for the scripted film Happiness (Azimut Films), written by Martine Delvaux.

The selected documentaries include Ahdoolo, holding the world together (Productions colorées), written by Emilie Porry; Golden Record: The Last Journey (Extérieur Jour), by Maxime Carbonneau and Laurence Dauphinais; and Endo-Warriors: Fighting an Invisible Disease (Entourage Films), by Josiane Blanc, Cynthia De Petrillo and Debra Kouri.

The remaining docs are Glows (Les Productions Calembredaines), written by Nadine Beaudet and Christian Fournier; Remaking the world (Portage Films), by Patrick Bossé; A future for the living (Studio 4 tiers), by Iolande Cadrin-Rossignol; and A sick world (Les films de Gary), by Simon Beaulieu.

Everything in its Place (Embuscade Films), written and directed by Félix Dufour-Laperrière, is the animated feature receiving SODEC support.

According to SODEC’s annual report, the organization invested $88.3 million in 345 Quebec-based audiovisual projects in fiscal 2023-24.
