Les Beaux Malaises adaptation bound for Belgium

A Flemish Belgium version of the 2014 TVA comedy will premiere in the region this fall.

French-Canadian comedy Les Beaux Malaises has been adapted in Flemish Belgium thanks to a deal between Montreal-based Encore Télévision-Distribution and Belgian distributor Crazy Cow.

Encore Télévision-Distribution brokered the deal with Crazy Cow for local prodco Sputnik Media to produce the adaptation, titled Boomer (pictured). It is slated to premiere this fall on Flemish Belgium channel VRT1.

The original version of Les Beaux Malaises was created by Martin Matte, who played a fictionalized version of himself in the comedy, which aired on TVA from 2014 to 2017. It was produced by Encore Télévision and Matte TV in collaboration with Quebecor Content.

The Flemish Belgium version is led by Belgian actor Jan Van Looveren, with his real-life wife, actor Els Beatse, and daughter portraying Looveren’s fictionalized family in the series.

Les Beaux Malaises has traveled previously, with French broadcaster M6 airing a local adaptation in France in 2016. A Balkan version, Slatke Muke, premiered in 2019 on Superstar TV.

“This new adaptation is proof of the timelessness of the series, which is so well loved here in Quebec and elsewhere in the world,” said Chrystine Girard, head of international distribution at Encore Télévision-Distribution in a statement. “After Belgium, France, Serbia and the Balkans, Les Beaux Malaises is also gaining traction in a number of territories where additional adaptations are [being] developed.”
