Prime Video and Hulu have commissioned multiverse teen comedy series Davey & Jonesie’s Locker from Toronto prodco marblemedia.
Created by Evany Rosen, the 10 x 30-series will stream on Prime Video in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and on Hulu in the U.S., according to a press release issued Monday (June 12).
Production is currently underway in Toronto, with Rosen also serving as showrunner.
Executive producers include Mark Bishop, Matt Hornburg, Diane Rankin, Carrie Paupst Shaughnessy, A.J. Trauth, and Rosen. Co-executive producers are Donna Luke and writer Stephanie Kaliner. Distribution360, marblemedia’s distribution arm, has worldwide distribution rights.
Produced in association with Hulu and Prime Video with the financial participation of the Shaw Rocket Fund, Davey & Jonesie’s Locker follows two best friends as they hop between alternate versions of their high school after discovering their locker is a portal to the multiverse.
Bishop, co-CEO and executive producer at marblemedia, said in a statement that Rosen’s “voice is delightfully original, and Davey & Jonesie’s Locker is sure to disrupt the status quo of series currently on offer for this demo.”
Rosen, a founding member of the comedy troupe Picnicface, previously co-created the Crave original New Eden, and has other writing credits with CBC, Disney, DreamWorks, AppleTV and Cartoon Network.
“My work has often focused on unique female relationships, and in creating a show for a teen audience I wanted to develop characters whose friendship felt authentically familiar, yet unlike what we often see portrayed on TV. Having been an extremely goofy 16-year-old myself once, my goal was to create a series about two best friends who have already learned to celebrate their bold senses of humour – and who get to enjoy the radical self-love that comes with that … long before they’re old enough to rent a car,” Rosen said in a statement.
Davey & Jonesie’s Locker stars Veronika Slowikowska (Baroness von Sketch Show) as Davey, and Jaelynn Thora Brooks (Heartland), as Jonesie, with Rosen playing Principal Neighbors.
The cast also includes Dan Beirne (The Handmaid’s Tale), Emily Piggford, Nikko Angelo Hinayo, Kevin Lauta Osea, Erika Swayze, Sydney Xiaolang Topliffe, Alexa Yaphe, Parker Lauzon, and James Hartnett.
Upcoming projects from marblemedia include Mr. Dressup, a feature documentary on the late children’s entertainer Ernie Coombs which is set for a release later this year on Prime Video. The release will be followed by a broadcast on CBC.
