Pascal Plante thriller to world premiere at Karlovy Vary

Les chambres rouges will premiere as part of the Czech Republic festival's Crystal Globe Competition

Quebec filmmaker Pascal Plante’s feature-length thriller Les chambres rouges (Red Rooms) will make its world premiere in competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic.

The French-language film is written and directed by Plante, and produced by Dominique Dussault of Montreal’s Nemesis Films, who also produced Plante’s 2020 sports drama Nadia, Butterfly. It is among 11 films selected for the festival’s Crystal Globe Competition.

Les chambres rouges stars Juliette Gariépy (You Can Live Forever) and follows a young woman with an obsession with a man accused of murdering three underage girls. Additional cast members include Laurie Babin, Elisabeth Locas and Maxwell McCabe-Lokos.

Telefilm Canada provided production funding for the film, which is distributed by Entract Films. Sphere Films is handling sales.

The festival will also host the European premiere of Pier-Philippe Chevigny’s feature Richelieu, produced by Montreal’s Le Foyer Films, as part of its special screenings.

The Canada/France/Guatemala copro will make its world premiere at Tribeca in June, and its Canadian premiere will take place at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, which begins in July.

Last year, the grand prize for the Crystal Globe Competition went to Sadaf Foroughi’s Canada/Iran copro Summer With Hope, which was up for Best Motion Picture at this year’s Canadian Screen Awards.

This year’s Crystal Globe jury includes Tunisian producer Dora Bouchoucha, American actor Patricia Clarkson, Sundance senior programmer John Nein, Slovenian director Olmo Omerzu and Irish actor Barry Ward.

Karlovy Vary runs from June 30 to July 8.
