M att Johnson’s BlackBerry grossed more than $300,000 at the Canadian box office during its opening weekend.
The film, which opened Friday (May 12), is the largest opening weekend for a Canadian film since PAW Patrol: The Movie ($1.9 million) in 2021, according to Canadian distributor Elevation Pictures, which provided the Canadian box office figures to Playback Daily.
BlackBerry brought in an estimated US$473,000 across 450 theatres in the U.S., according to Comscore. IFC Films handles U.S. distribution.
Johnson directed and co-wrote the feature about the rise and fall of the Canadian company that invented the BlackBerry mobile device. Matthew Miller co-wrote and produced the film under Zapruder Films alongside producers Niv Fichman, Fraser Ash and Kevin Krikst of Toronto’s Rhombus Media. It stars Johnson, Jay Baruchel and Glenn Howerton.
BlackBerry‘s opening weekend surpassed recent homegrown film openings at the Canadian box office such as Quebec animation Katak, the Brave Beluga ($255,000) and Brandon Cronenberg’s horror Infinity Pool ($220,000), as well as 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City ($254,000), according to Elevation.
It was produced with the participation of Telefilm Canada, the Canada Media Fund and Ontario Creates, in association with CBC Films and Finland’s IPR.VC, and XYZ Films.
BlackBerry had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year.
