Bell Media has secured a “sweeping” long-term content agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) for its digital and broadcast platforms.
The broadcaster announced the exclusive licensing deal on Tuesday (May 2), which will see streaming service Crave become “the home of programming from the studio for years to come.”
Bell Media said the deal will also feed content to linear network CTV, and its CTV-branded specialty channels Drama, Comedy, Sci-Fi and Life, as well as digital platforms CTV.ca and the CTV app.
The deal expands on the licensing agreement for original Max (formerly HBO Max) content, which was signed in 2019, and includes content from DC Universe, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, as well as the continued use of HBO programming.
It extends the pay and post-pay window rights for first-run feature films from Warner Bros. Pictures, and brings network and cable series and post-pay movies to CTV and other Bell Media specialty channels.
Bell Media has also secured French-language rights to HBO and Max original series, in addition to library titles such as Friends and the Harry Potter film series.
Upcoming programming under the deal includes new seasons of HBO series The Last of Us (pictured) and Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon, the recently-announced series adaptation of the Harry Potter book series, and the drama series The Penguin, based on the iteration of the comic book character that appeared in the 2022 Warner Bros. film The Batman. Among the upcoming films are The Flash, Dune: Part Two, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and Magic Mike’s Last Dance.
The agreement also includes popular library content from WBD, including U.S. sitcoms Friends and The Big Bang Theory, and film series from The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter franchises, to name a few.
“We are thrilled to work with our partners at WBD to build upon our already strong relationship with this unprecedented agreement – a true landmark deal for the Canadian media industry,” said Bell’s Karine Moses, SVP, content development and news, and vice chair, Québec, in a statement.
David Decker, president of content sales at WBD, added that Bell Media is “one of our most important and long-standing partners,” and the agreement will “ensure Canadians have full and easy access” to new and existing WBD content.
