Blue Ant International is heading to MIPTV with a spring slate of more than 450 hours of new content, including Canadian-produced unscripted series featuring homegrown comedy star Carolyn Taylor, a family bridal shop in Toronto’s Little India neighbourhood, and horror director Eli Roth.
The global distribution division of Toronto-headquartered Blue Ant Media is looking to connect with buyers and partners about its new catalogue of premium series and documentaries, as well as ways to create “bespoke deal structures that include creative financing solutions for coproductions or presales of new projects,” Solange Attwood, EVP, Blue Ant International, said in a statement.
The company’s slate for MIPTV, which runs April 17 to 19 in Cannes, includes the 6 x 30-minute I Have Nothing (pictured) from Toronto-based Catalyst and Blue Ant Media global production arm Blue Ant Studios. Commissioned by Bell Media’s Crave last June, the series sees Taylor (Baroness von Sketch Show) attempt to choreograph a pairs figure skating routine to Whitney Houston’s hit song I Have Nothing, with the support of fellow Canuck comedy star Mae Martin and several figure skating legends.
Catalyst and Blue Ant Studios are also producers on the 8 x 60-minute docuseries Mission Unexplained, which was commissioned by T+E and features eyewitness tales from military veterans about unexplained events.
Other Blue Ant Studios-produced offerings include the 3 x 60-minute Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies, which “provides unprecedented access to Casey Anthony herself and offers a jaw-dropping new perspective on the death of two-year-old Caylee Anthony,” according to a news release.
The 10 x 30-minute Bollywed, which is produced by Toronto-based HeartHat Entertainment and premiered on CBC in January, follows the Singh family as they run their long-standing bridal store, Chandan Fashion.
Toronto-based Cream Productions is the producer on two of Roth’s series on the spring 2023 slate: the 8 x 60-minute horror anthology series Urban Legend (original broadcasters: Discovery U.S., CTV) and the 4 x 60-minute Eli Roth Presents: My Posessed Pet, about true-life stories of “evil spirits, curses and demons” taking over furry companions (original broadcaster: Discovery+).
Blue Ant’s Toronto-based Saloon Media is also behind two titles on the slate: season two of 10 x 60-minute Mysteries From Above, which explores historic and contemporary sites from above with drone, satellite, and aerial photography; and Brink of Disaster (3 x 90 minutes; 6 x 60 minutes), which is also produced by U.K.-based Wildflame Productions and shows the destruction caused by natural disasters in cities and how science and technology can help.
From Swift Current, Sask.-based Overtime Studios is the 6 x 30-minute Staying Wild, about the rescue team at the Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Saskatoon. The series was commissioned by Citytv Saskatchewan last June.
The 1 x 60-minute Apocalypse Plan B is produced by Toronto-based Grand Passage Media (original broadcaster: CBC) and features David Suzuki in a look at “geo-engineering” experts “who hope to avert climate doom” through unconventional methods.
A slew of other internationally-produced projects are on the docket. Among them is the 6 x 60-minute real estate reality series Dubai: Buying the Dream (U.K.’s Angel Eye Media); the 6 x 60-minute documentary series Citizens At War: A Year in Ukraine (GTV, Tilt, Film.UA); and the 1 x 60-minute espionage thriller The Real Spies Among Friends (U.K.’s Wingspan).
Another timely offering is found in the 1 x 60-minute royal family documentary Born to Be King (U.K.’s Touchdown Films), which comes just weeks ahead of King Charles III’s coronation.
Wildlife is featured in the 1 x 60-minute Deep In The Heart (Texas-based Fin & Fur Films), narrated by film star Matthew McConaughey; the 6 x 30-minute Wild Dogs: Packs vs. Pride (U.K.-based Icon Films); the 6 x 60-minute Wildlife ER season two (Australia’s Wild Bear Productions); and Ireland’s Wild Islands (2 x 60 minutes non-hosted blue chip, 3 x 60 minutes hosted 4K HDR; Ireland’s Crossing the Line).
Other slate highlights include Amazon Original Three Mothers, Two Babies and A Scandal (3 x 60 minutes; Glasgow-based Firecrest Films); The Black Death with Dan Snow (2 x 60 minutes ; 1 x 120 minutes; History Hit); Britain’s Most Luxurious Train Journeys (4 x 60 minutes; U.K.’s Candour); and Home Greek Home (6 x 60 minutes; Glasgow-based Friel Kean).
