Just in time for maple syrup season in Canada, Prime Video’s Amazon original Canadian coproduction The Sticky has kicked off production in Quebec.
Prime Video announced in a news release on Wednesday (March 22) that cameras are rolling on the half-hour scripted series, with recent Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis (pictured far left; Everything Everywhere All at Once) set to guest star.
She was previously announced as an executive producer, with her banner Comet Pictures among the production companies on the English-language maple syrup heist comedy, which is also produced by Montreal’s Sphere Media and U.S. prodcos Blumhouse Television and Megamix.
The executive producers include creators Brian Donovan and Ed Herro; Jonathan Levine and Gillian Bohrer for Megamix; Curtis for Comet Pictures; Josée Vallée and Bruno Dubé for Sphere Media; Jason Blum, Chris McCumber, Jeremy Gold, and Chris Dickie for Blumhouse Television; and Michael Dowse, according to the release.
Toronto’s Lauren Grant of Clique Pictures serves as co-executive producer.
Directors Dowse (Goon) and Joyce Wong (Sort Of) are helming the series, which will film in and around Montreal and be available exclusively on Prime Video in 240 countries and territories worldwide in 2024. The number of episodes hasn’t been confirmed yet, a spokesperson tells Playback Daily.
Wednesday’s release also announced cast members for the series, including U.S. star Margo Martindale (pictured middle-left), and Canadians Chris Diamantopoulos (pictured middle-right) and Guillaume Cyr Tap (pictured far right).
Inspired by the true story of the so-called “Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist” of 2011 in Quebec, The Sticky follows a maple syrup farmer (Martindale) in a battle against the bureaucracy that’s threatening “her farm, her comatose husband, and her right to freedom,” said the release. Her fate changes with the help of a security guard (Cyr) and mobster (Diamantopoulos).
Cyr is represented by Maxime Vanasse and Alexis Vanasse at MVA Talent Agency. Dowse is represented in the U.S. by United Talent Agency, Fourth Wall Management, and Paul Hastings, and Great North Artists Management in Toronto. Wong is represented by CAA, Aaron Brown at Avalon Management, and Great North Artists Management in Toronto.
