Sphere Films International has closed deals for several of its Canadian titles at the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin, including Anthony Shim’s Riceboy Sleeps, Stéphane Lafleur’s Viking and Jennifer Baichwal’s Into the Weeds.
Riceboy Sleeps (pictured) has sold to 1091 Pictures for the U.S., Icon for Australia and New Zealand, Pancinema in Korea, Lighthouse Film in Singapore, Creative Century in Taiwan, September Films in Benelux, Yoda Films in Spain and Lev Films in Israel.
The drama will have a theatrical release in Korea and Singapore in the spring, according to a news release issued Sunday (Feb. 19), which said other releases will follow shortly.
Meanwhile, Viking will have a U.S. release through Cinedigm after Paris-based UFO Distribution nabbed the film for France last year. Into the Weeds has been bought for the U.S. by Film Movement.
Sphere Films International has several other titles at EFM, which runs through Wednesday (Feb. 22). They include Jub Clerc’s Australian road movie Sweet As, which is making its European premiere in the Generation Kplus section of Berlinale, and animation film Space Cadet from DJ Kid Koala, for which Sphere is launching presales.
The Canadian sales agent is also launching the French-language drama A Respectable Woman (Une Femme respectable) from Canadian director Bernard Emond, and fellow Quebec filmmaker Francis Leclerc’s The Dishwasher (Le Plongeur), which is based on the book of the same name. Maison 4:3 holds Canadian distribution rights to A Respectable Woman, while Immina Films has the rights to The Dishwasher.
Both Riceboy Sleeps (Lonesome Heroes Productions, Kind Stranger Productions, A Lasting Dose Productions) and Viking (micro_scope) premiered at last September’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where the former won the juried Platform Prize and has since made a splash on the awards circuit.
Shim is the writer, director, producer and editor of the drama, which follows a Korean single mother and her son living in B.C. and is up for the Rogers Best Canadian Film Award at next month’s 26th Annual TFCA Awards Gala. Its other honours include a sweep of the British Columbia categories at last week’s Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards, winning Best BC Film as well as Best BC Director and One to Watch for Shim.
Game Theory Films is the Canadian distributor of Riceboy Sleeps, which will have a limited release in theatres across Canada starting on March 17.
Lafleur directed Viking and co-wrote it with Éric K. Boulianne. The French-language sci-fi comedy was booked in at least a dozen film festivals since TIFF, with the Santa Barbara International Film Festival among the latest.
Into the Weeds was written, directed and produced by Baichwal, and produced by Nicholas de Pencier. It premiered as the opening film of last year’s Hot Docs festival in Toronto
