Hot Sheet: The Handmaid’s Tale season finale tops digital demand

Netflix’s Stranger Things fell from its No. 1 spot on the digital originals chart for the week of Nov. 7 to 13.

Hulu original The Handmaid’s Tale saw a boost in Canadian demand following its season five finale, overthrowing Netflix’s Stranger Things from its reign on the digital originals chart.

Based on Canadian author Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, the Ontario-shot series (pictured) brought in a demand average of 28.41, which is higher than the previous week’s 27.09, for the week of Nov. 7 to 13, according to Parrot Analytics. The Handmaid’s Tale, starring Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, and Bradley Whitford, came in at No. 1 on the digital originals chart and No. 3 on the overall TV demand list for the week.

Netflix’s Stranger Things ranked at No. 2 on the digital originals chart and No. 5 on the overall TV demand list with 27.79 for the week — a lower figure than the previous week’s 28.07. This is the second time the hit sci-fi series came in second on the digital originals chart after it was dethroned by Netflix’s Cobra Kai in September. The series has near-dominated the digital originals chart since its season four premiere on May 27.

Netflix’s The Crown made its debut on the digital originals chart after its season five premiere on Nov. 9. The series, which chronicles Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, was 23.54 times more in demand than the average series in Canada for the week, hitting the No. 4 spot.

Warrior Nun, created by Canada’s Simon Barry and adapted from the comic book character by Ben Dunn, was another Netflix original to hit the digital chart, debuting at No. 8 with an average demand of 15.24.

Disney+’s Andor appeared on the digital originals chart at No. 3 and at No. 8 on the overall TV list with a demand average of 25.82 – an increase from the previous week’s 24.9. Netflix’s The Witcher came in at No. 5 with 18.72 – a significant decrease from the previous week’s 24.46.

At the top of the overall TV demand list for the week was HBO’s Game of Thrones with 31.52 — a slight decrease from the previous week’s 33.02. It was followed by NBC’s Saturday Night Live with 29.52, while HBO’s House of the Dragon came in at No. 4 on the chart with 28.28 – a lower figure compared to the previous week’s 32.04.

Parrot Analytics calculates its Top 10 lists using Demand Expressions, which are shown by using a metric that demonstrates how much more in-demand the top series are than the average TV show (linear, pay TV, SVOD and AVOD) in Canada. For example, a difference of 1x represents the market average and 10x means a series is 10 times more in demand than the average TV show in this market.
