The CW orders 3Bird Media food competition series

Recipe for Disaster will be shot in Toronto and see professional chefs facing "disasters" in fantastical worlds while cooking dishes.

The CW Network has ordered Toronto prodco 3Bird Media’s food competition series Recipe for Disaster for its unscripted 2022-23 programming slate.

The U.S. network announced the 13 x 30-minute episode premiere season as a planned mid-season launch during its 2022 upfront in New York.

Jennifer Twamley (pictured left) and Andrika Lawren (pictured right), the Toronto-based founders of 3Bird Media, will act as executive producers and showrunners.

Recipe for Disaster will feature professional chefs creating dishes in fantastical settings, including a Desert Island, Mars, Broadway and the apocalypse. As they compete, they have to fend off over-the-top staged disasters, such as aliens and falling coconuts.

Production is set to begin in Toronto this fall.

In a statement, Lawren and Twamley say the series is about “reimagining what kitchen disasters look like.” Cyle Zezo, the CW’s VP of alternative and digital programming, encouraged them “to push the series into an innovative space,” they added, noting it was “a dream creative collaboration.”

The CW has previously acquired Canadian scripted dramas Family Law and Coroner, with both set to air during its fall 2022 primetime schedule.
