Cineflix Media has acquired Coroner and Bomb Girls production company Back Alley Film Productions.

The deal includes the Toronto-based prodco’s entire library content, with Cineflix absorbing Back Alley Films’ operations and assets.

Back Alley Films co-founders Adrienne Mitchell and Janis Lundman will not join Cineflix Media as part of the acquisition. Lundman will transition to the role of consultant while Mitchell has launched a new production company titled BentFrame Film & TV, which will develop female-driven series and films.

Back Alley Films has co-produced the CBC crime procedural Coroner with Cineflix Studios and Muse Entertainment for the last four seasons. The new deal sees Cineflix acquire Back Alley Films’ stake in the series. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Other titles included in the Back Alley Films library are the Anna Paquin-led mystery Bellevue, Second World War drama Bomb Girls and the crime drama Durham County.

Back Alley Films was founded by Lundman and Mitchell more than 25 years ago, producing the documentary feature Talk 16 in the early ’90s, which involved interviews with hundreds of teen girls in Toronto. That was followed three years later with Talk 19. The company moved on to drama series with Straight Up starring Sarah Polley, earning two Gemini Awards, followed by Drop the Beat and Bliss. Their award-winning series Durham County premiered in 2007.
