CRTC to hand down CBC/Radio-Canada licence renewal decision by end of June

The CRTC set the deadline as it issued another administrative renewal of the pubcaster's current broadcast licences.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) will set its decision on CBC/Radio-Canada’s broadcast licence renewal by the end of June.

The Commission stated it will renew the licences before June 30 as part of an administrative renewal of the current licences, which were set to expire on March 31. The public broadcaster’s licences are now set to expire on Aug. 31.

This is the second administrative renewal for CBC/Radio-Canada’s broadcast licences, which were previously set to expire on Aug. 31, 2021.

It has been more than a year since the CRTC held a lengthy virtual renewal hearing process for CBC/Radio-Canada. Among the core talking points were a call for more data transparency from the public broadcaster and a request from CBC/Radio-Canada for programming requirement flexibility to better meet the demands for both linear and streaming audiences.

The CRTC said the June 30 renewal deadline means CBC will be able implement the requirements of its next licence term at the beginning of the 2022/23 broadcast year, which starts on Sept. 1.

“Among other things, this will make it easier for the Corporation to report on the implementation of any new or continued requirements set out by condition of licence, any Commission expectations and encouragements, and any other commitments by the Corporation on a year-by-year basis, thereby eliminating the need for the public broadcaster to file reports in regard to the above for a partial broadcast year,” wrote the CRTC in the decision.
