Class is in session once again for The Kids in the Hall at Prime Video.
The Amazon streamer has announced The Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks, a two-part documentary produced by Blue Ant Studios about the groundbreaking Canadian comedy troupe. The project joins Prime Video’s upcoming revival of The Kids in the Hall sketch show, which was announced in March 2020 and will feature all of the original cast members.
The Kids in the Hall started as a stage troupe in 1984 and became an international cult hit with a sketch comedy series that ran on CBC and HBO with members Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson.
The Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks explores the group’s post-punk era origins and their 40-year journey across five seasons of their TV series, their film Brain Candy and multiple sold-out tours. The docuseries has never-before-seen archive footage of the troupe and in-depth interviews with them as well as comedy giants including Fred Armisen, Lauren Ash, Jay Baruchel, Lewis Black, Janeane Garofalo, Eddie Izzard, Mae Martin, Eric McCormack, Lorne Michaels and Mike Myers.
The documentary is drawn from the biography The Kids in the Hall: One Dumb Guy by Paul Myers, who serves as an executive producer. It’s produced by Nick McKinney (The Daily Show) and directed by Reg Harkema (Super Duper Alice Cooper). Executive Producers for Blue Ant Studios are Laura Michalchyshyn, Sam Sniderman and Jennifer Harkness. Kim Creelman is producer.
The Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks will premiere at SXSW, which runs March 11 to 19, before launching with the revival of Amazon original The Kids in the Hall later this year on Prime Video. The project will also premiere on Blue Ant Media channel A.Side in Canada.
The Kids in the Hall sketch series revival, produced by Toronto prodco Project 10 and original producer Broadway Video, will be available exclusively on Prime Video in 240 countries and territories worldwide.
“The Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks is a deep and intimate look into the world of the legendary troupe. It offers a fascinating take on the cultural climate in which their groundbreaking comedy flourished,” said Laura Michalchyshyn, CCO at Blue Ant Studios and executive producer for the doc, in a statement. “Their grassroots story as counterculture outsiders, whose sketches poked fun at corporate greed and amplified the comedy in everyday life, resonates with all of us. Their creativity and influence still inspires.”
