CBC is in development on a half-hour comedy inspired by the life of Canadian comic and YouTube personality Jasmeet Singh Raina (aka Jus Reign).
Late Bloomer (working title) is being produced by Pier 21 Films and Raina’s production banner, Reign Productions, with comedian Russell Peters on board as an executive producer.
The in-development project is created and written by Raina, who also plays the lead. The series is inspired by the life of Raina, a first generation Indo-Canadian, and sees him navigating his new-found internet fame, dating, spirituality, culture, and his dysfunctional family.
Raina has built a dedicated online following in recent years, with his YouTube channel amassing around 970,000 subscribers and 167 million views.
Executive producers on the project are Pier 21, Baljinder Dhawan, Russell Peters and his manager and brother, Clayton Peters.
The announcement comes as Beaverton producer Pier 21 expands its comedy strategy. In September, the Toronto-based prodco hired former CBC exec Karen Tsang as VP of development and promoted Bill Lundy to SVP of development. Reign Productions, headed up by Raina and Dhawan, focuses on content highlighting the South Asian diaspora.
