Deals: eOne, levelFILM, NFB, Nelvana

eOne takes over content distribution for My Little Pony: Pony Life with global sales, while levelFILM and Gravitas Ventures acquire Canadian titles and Nelvana brings its animated content to Vuulr.

Entertainment One (eOne) has secured a raft of global sales for its new series My Little Pony: Pony Life (pictured), which is set to premiere in select territories this fall.

The 40 x 11-minute series has now been acquired by broadcasters in Canada (Treehouse), the U.S. (Discovery Family), Australia (Turner Australia, Turner South East Asia and Channel 9 GO!), New Zealand (TVNZ), Singapore (Mediacorp), the Middle East (Spacetoon), the U.K. (Tiny Pop), Latin America (Discovery Kids), Germany (Disney Channel), France (Gulli) and Italy (Cartoonito). The series will premiere across the territories between late 2020 and spring 2021.

eOne took over content distribution of the My Little Pony brand following its acquisition by Hasbro in late 2019, as well as Power Rangers and Transformers, while continuing to oversee distribution for its pre-acquisition IP Peppa Pig, PJ Masks and Ricky Zoom.

levelFILM

Toronto-based distributor levelFILM has acquired the rights to Denis Theriault’s I am Syd Stone. The six-part digital series is produced and co-written by Gharrett Patrick Paon of Rebel Road Films and Dog Pound Productions and co-written and directed by Theriault, with funding from Telefilm’s Talent to Watch program. I am Syd Stone, which follows a Hollywood actor as he enters a secret affair with another man and potentially derails his career, recently had its world premiere at the 30th annual Inside Out festival. Paon went into production on his first feature as a producer, Wildhood, earlier this year.

National Film Board of Canada

Gravitas Ventures has picked up the U.S. rights to the documentary Assholes: A Theory, directed and produced by John Walker with the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), in association with documentary Channel and the Canada Media Fund. The Red Arrow Studios-owned distribution company will release the film in theatres on Oct. 30 and on VOD one week later on Nov. 6. Walker produced the film with Ann Bernier and Annette Clark, which is inspired by the New York Times bestseller that began a philosophical investigation into the global rise of “asshole behaviour.” The deal was negotiated by Gravitas’ Nick Royak with the NFB’s Nathalie Bourdon and Oscar Rangel.

Nelvana

Global online content marketplace Vuulr has added animated programming from Corus Entertainment-owned Nelvana to its content library. Titles such as Franklin, Beyblade Metal Series, Bravest Warriors and Mike the Knight can now be found on the digital marketplace for licensing agreements. The service recently reached the milestone of 100,000 hours of available content. Buyers registered with Vuulr include Disney, ViacomCBS, BBC, Rakuten TV and Turner International APAC. Vuulr added more than 500 hours of content from Gusto Worldwide Media earlier this year.
