Viacom-owned streamer Pluto TV has launched a channel dedicated to beloved Canadian teen drama series Degrassi.
Unveiled yesterday (Oct. 1), the Degrassi channel is available in the U.S. and U.K. and features two series from its franchise, Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001-2009, pictured) starring Aubrey Graham (aka Drake) and its follow-up Degrassi (2010-2015).
The first installment of the Degrassi series, The Kids of Degrassi Street (produced by Playing With Time) debuted on the CBC in 1980. Its fourth series, Degrassi: The Next Generation, tracked students as they experienced a number of “firsts” on their journey into adulthood, while its continuation Degrassi was restructured into a telenovela format.
This deal with the U.S.-based ad-supported OTT follows DHX Media’s rebrand to WildBrain last week.
The move saw the Canadian media company, which acquired Degrassi producer Epitome Pictures for $33 million in 2014, bring all its business units under the WildBrain brand name. The rebrand comes nine years after WildBrain acquired L.A.-based TV producer Wildbrain Entertainment. WildBrain owns and distributes the Degrassi franchise.
