Hit U.K. television format The Great British Bake Off is headed to CBC this fall, with Toronto’s Proper Television tapped to produce the hour-long show.
The Great Canadian Baking Show will pit 10 amateur bakers from across the country against one another in a series of culinary challenges.
The eight-part series will be produced by Proper in association with CBC and Love Productions, the London, U.K.-based company behind the original format, which has since been remade in 23 territories globally, including for U.S., Australian, French and Irish markets.
To introduce domestic audiences to the format, CBC will air the British version of the series over the summer. Filming on the series will begin in the middle of May and shooting locations are still to be determined. Casting for the first season of the Canadian series is now underway, though CBC has not yet announced the identity of the host for the series.
The format to the series is owned by Love Productions and it distributed internationally by Sky Vision.
The competition-based cooking space is filling up fast in Canada, with Gusto last month adding two British cooking series to its winter lineup: Britain’s Best Bakery and Jamie and Jimmy’s Food Fight Club.
Proper Television has seen an uptick in its production output over the past 12 months. Last Stop Garage (12 x 30 minutes) was greenlit by Bell Media’s Discovery earlier this month, while it also produced True North Calling as part of CBC’s Canada 150 programming roster. A second season of the prodco’s Tougher Than It Looks? (Discovery) was also given the greenlight last month.
