Room opens to $27K weekend in Toronto

The Ireland/Canada copro, distributed by Elevation Pictures, posted a $27,497 opening weekend at Cineplex's Varsity theatre.

The Ireland/Canada copro Room posted a strong showing at the Canadian box office for its opening weekend, posting the biggest opening weekend on a per-theatre basis of any Canadian film or copro in eight years, according to Rentrak data provided by distributor Elevation Pictures.

Room pulled in $27,497 at Toronto’s Cineplex Variety theatre over the Oct. 23-25 weekend, the only theatre in which it screened. The high-water mark for per-theatre average for a Canadian film or copro on opening is David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises, which averaged $27,828 on its initial release of Sept. 14, 2007, according to Rentrak information provided by Elevation.

Room also had the highest per-screen average of any film in Canada over the weekend, and Varsity’s screenings were the highest-grossing of any theatre playing Room this weekend – including the U.S.

Elevation will release Room in Montreal and Vancouver this coming weekend before expanding into all other major Canadian markets on Nov. 6.

The film also posted a strong opening in the U.S., where it posted the highest per-location average of any film in theatres over the Oct. 16 weekend. It bowed on four screens in New York and Los Angeles over the Oct. 16 to Oct. 18 weekend, earning a per-location average of nearly $30,000.
