Telefilm Canada has named five English-language films have received financing via the latest round of funds distributed through the Canada Feature Film Fund.
A total of $2.6 million was split between Rob Connolly’s Beyond the Pale ($500,000), Peter Lynch’s Birdland ($330,683), Darren Curtis’ Boost ($440,000), Katherine Schlemmer’s The Death and Life of Carl Naardlinger ($100,000) and Ed Gass-Donnelly’s Lavender ($1.3 million).
Beyond the Pale (working title) is a psychological thriller written by Kyle Mann and produced by his Vancouver-based prodco Independent Edge Films. Scheduled for a spring 2016 release, the film is set to star Joel Kinnaman (Suicide Squad), Tom Holland (The Impossible) and Rachelle Lefevre (Twilight).
Lynch’s Birdland was co-written by Lynch and Lee Gowan, with a release planned for fall 2016. The crime/mystery feature is produced by Acqua Films and Ultra 8 Pictures, with 108 Media Corp attached to handle distribution. Kathleen Munroe, Benjamin Ayres and Melanie Scrofano are among the talent confirmed for the project.
Both written and directed by Curtis, Boost is a coming-of-age drama produced by Montreal’s Bunbury Films and distributed by Filmoption International. Jahmil French, Fanny Mallette and Nabil Rajo are the confirmed stars thus far, with the film set for a fall 2016 release.
The Death and Life of Carl Naardlinger is an absurdist comedy penned and directed by Katherine Schlemmer. Cinéman Films are producing the feature, with Matt Baram, Grace Lynn Kung, Mark Forward set to star.
Set for a 2016 release, director Gass-Donnelly (Small Town Murder Songs) wrote the screenplay for Lavender with Colin Frizzell. Pacific North West is attached to distribute the psychological thriller, with 3 Legged Dog Films and South Creek Pictures producing. Abbie Cornish (Sucker Punch), Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding), Justin Long (Live Free or Die Hard) and Diego Klattenhoff are slated to star.
Of the selected films, Boost, Birdland and The Death and Life of Carl Naardlinger were identified by Telefilm as lower-budget films. Telefilm announced its previous funding round for English-language features in July.
