The Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) has added 21 documentaries to its lineup, including U.K./Canada coproduction Invention, U.S./Canada copro Mavis! and a world premiere for Canadian doc-maker Phyllis Ellis’ Painted Land: In Search of the Group of Seven (pictured).
Painted Land is a White Pine Pictures production set in Ontario’s Algoma region, as three adventurers traverse the wild terrain to discover the places that inspired art from the Group of Seven.
Invention follows Canadian film and video installation artist Mark Lewis as he showcases his work from Toronto to São Paolo to Paris, including at an exhibition at the Louvre in 2014.
Mavis! from filmmaker Jessica Edwards charts the life and career of gospel/soul legend Mavis Staples. The documentary, from Brooklyn, New York-based prodco Film First, includes rare archival footage featuring Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt and Chuck D. Mavis! had its world premiere at this year’s Hot Docs International Documentary Festival.
The festival will also feature an international premiere for Erbarme dich – Matthäus Passion Stories from Dutch filmmaker Ramón Gieling, and Canadian premieres for François Verster’s The Dream of Shahrazad, Thom Andersen’s The Thoughts That Once We Had and Original Copy from German filmmakers Florian Heinzen-Ziob and Georg Heinzen.
