NBC has confirmed that it is not going ahead with a fourth season of Hannibal.
The drama shot its three-season run in Toronto, joining a roster of high-budget U.S. series shooting in the city, such as Suits and The Strain.
NBC released several statements on the cancellation, including an amusing and optimistic statement from writer/producer Bryan Fuller, who created the series, alluding to the fact that in today’s content landscape, a series can easily be reborn on another net.
“NBC has allowed us to craft a television series that no other broadcast network would have dared, and kept us on the air for three seasons despite Cancellation Bear Chow ratings and images that would have shredded the eyeballs of lesser Standards & Practices enforcers. Jen Salke and her team have been fantastic partners and creatively supportive beyond measure. Hannibal is finishing his last course at NBC’s table this summer, but a hungry cannibal can always dine again. And personally, I look forward to my next meal with NBC.”
The series starred Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter and English actor Hugh Dancy as an FBI special investigator. Canadian actors appearing on the series included Scott Thompson and Katharine Isabelle.
The series was produced by Gaumont International alongside Living Dead Guy, Dino De Laurentiis Company and AXN.
