Class not yet dismissed for Degrassi

Degrassi: Next Class, the latest installment in the Degrassi franchise, will bow in January 2016 on Family Channel, with Netflix set to stream the series globally in early 2016.

degrassi newThe latest iteration of Epitome Pictures’ Degrassi franchise, Degrassi: Next Class, will bow on DHX Television’s Family Channel in January 2016, it was announced Tuesday.

Netflix has also picked up the series, and will start streaming it all territories in early 2016 excluding Canada, Australia and France, where it will stream at a later date. Family Channel has a first-run window on the series in Canada before episodes will appear on Netflix, although the exact timing of the windows has not yet been determined.

The news comes less than a week after Bell Media’s MTV Canada and U.S. kids net TeenNick announced they were ending Degrassi after 14 years on the air. Pre-production is underway Degrassi: Next Class, with the first season of the latest series in the franchise to include 20 x 30-minute episodes. The series will be shot in Toronto.

Degrassi: Next Class will feature many cast members and characters from the previous iteration of Degrassi, including Amanda Arcuri as Lola Pacini, Reiya Downs as Shay Powers, Ana Golja as Zoe Rivas, Nikki Gould as Grace Cardinal, Ricardo Hoyos as Zig Novak, Ehren Kassam as Jonah Haak and Andre Kim as Winston Chu.

Degrassi: Next Class is produced by DHX Media’s Epitome Pictures, in association with Family Channel and Netflix. This latest series was co-created by Linda Schuyler, who also serves as executive producer along with Stephen Stohn, Sarah Glinski and Matt Huether.
