Xavier Dolan’s Mommy has won Telefilm Canada’s 2014 Guichet d’Or prize.
The award, now in its eighth year, is presented to the Canadian French-language feature film with the highest-grossing domestic box office sales for the year. The Guichet d’Or award includes a $20,000 prize to the director of the winning film, and a $20,000 prize to the writer. Since Dolan is both the writer and director, he will receive the full $40,000 prize.
The award will be presented to Mommy writer/director Dolan at a ceremony held on Montreal’s Phi Centre on March 4.
As of the week of Feb. 6 to Feb. 12, Mommy had earned $3,366,749 at the Canadian box office according to information provided by MPTAC and Zoom Services. The film is up for 13 Canadian Screen Awards this year, including a best motion picture nomination and best direction. Last year, Mommy won the third-place Jury Prize, sharing the award with Jean-Luc Godard’s Goodbye to Language.
Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrect stated that the director of the Guichet d’Or wins a $40,000 prize. The prize for the director is $20,000, with $20,000 also awarded to the writer of the winning film. Since Xavier Dolan is both the director and writer of Mommy, he will receive the full $40,000 prize.
