Canadian director goes on Dragons’ Den to market movie release

CBC viewers will soon learn whether Murray Foster successfully boiled down his two-hour long The Cocksure Lads Movie into a Dragons’ Den elevator pitch.

The musician-turned-director’s Dragons’ Den appearance happened in early April 2014. The Cocksure Lads Movie band performed a song on camera, before Foster, with go-go dancers at his side, pitched the Dragons on investing $50,000 to market his upcoming theatrical release.

The result will be known when the Dragon’s Den episode airs on Jan. 21, 2015.

The Cocksure Lads Movie executive producer Tamara Doerksen told Playback Daily that pitching on CBC’s Dragons’ Den, besides possibly landing film financing, offered national media exposure the indie filmmakers could not afford for their theatrical release.

“At minimum, we knew that if we appeared on the show, our pitch would be seen by millions of people, which was significant exposure, and could increase film profits and investor return,” Doerksen said.

Besides Canadian movie-goers, the filmmakers were also looking to impress private investors, film festivals and distributors eyeing The Cocksure Lads Movie.

“Getting aired would also allow us to promote the movie ‘As Seen on Dragons’ Den.’ And if we got a deal with one or more Dragon, we’d have their endorsement, which would add even more weight and credibility – the perfect storm,” Doerksen said.

The Cocksure Lads Movie, written and directed by Foster, formerly of Moxy Früvous and bass player for Great Big Sea, portrays an English band arriving in Toronto for their first-ever North American tour, only to fight over royalties and break up before suspense over whether they can patch things up before their big show.

Much legwork and rehearsing went into developing and honing the Dragons’ Den pitch. Foster and Doerksen attended a Toronto audition for the CBC reality show in January 2014, where producers first tasted the film pitch.

The duo were tested on the strength of the numbers behind their pitch, and on whether Foster could hold up when the Dragons’ Den cameras rolled.

The Cocksure Lads Movie producers learned in March 2014 that Foster would pitch the Dragons on air.

The film stars Lyndon Ogbourne, Adam McNab, Luke Marty and Edward Hillier.
