New format from Proper greenlit for Discovery

Discovery Canada has greenlit nine, one-hour episodes of Handyman Smackdown (working title) from Proper Television, a DIY competition series slated to start production this September.

The series is an original format from Proper, which also produced six seasons of Canada’s Worst Handyman for Discovery Canada.

Like Canada’s Worst Handyman, Handyman Smackdown aims to provide viewers with a humorous reality show that follows the exploits of contestants as they try to complete renovation and home improvement projects.

“We pride ourselves in bringing the funny, and this will be no different,” Guy O’Sullivan, president of Proper Television.

O’Sullivan said Handyman Smackdown will be markedly different than Canada’s Worst Handyman, with teams of two aiming to improve their skills for a shot at a cash prize. The show will also feature three judges, rather than just one host as seen in Canada’s Worst Handyman. The competition will likely take place on a fixer-upper resort in Ontario’s cottage country, O’Sullivan said.

While exact broadcast details have not been set, Discovery Canada is aiming to put the show to air in spring 2015. Casting for the series is currently underway.
