Technicolor to acquire VFX giant Mr. X

Technicolor is buying Dennis Berardi’s Mr. X and folding the Canadian FX giant into its production services division.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but will make Toronto-based Mr. X a subsidiary of Technicolor and give it more resources to grow.

Mr. X, which employs around 200 people, has provided FX to Showtime’s Penny Dreadful, Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain for FX, which is shot in Toronto, and movies like RoboCop, Anchorman: The Legend Continues and the Resident Evil franchise for Constantin Film.

The Mr. X deal comes as Technicolor looks to provide VFX for the international TV and film markets.

Mr. X, in the Technicolor fold alongside the sister VFX house MPC (Maleficent, Godzilla), will focus on high-end TV series, genre features and international film coproductions, many of which are posted in Canada.

Berardi, who co-founded Mr. X, becomes global managing director of the Canadian FX house, reporting to Tim Sarnoff, president of production services for Technicolor.

Mr. X provides design and pre-visualization, 3D animation, CGI effects, compositing and VFX supervision and production management.

Technicolor’s deal for Mr. X requires the approval of Canadian Heritage.
