The best and brightest of B.C.’s entertainment industry gathered in Vancouver this weekend to celebrate the province’s screen production industry at the 2014 Leo Awards.
Sci-fi drama Continuum was one of the night’s big winners, taking home eight awards in total, including best dramatic series (producers: Simon Barry, Tom Rowe, Lisa Richardson, Matthew O’Connor, Holly Redford and Pat Williams) and a best screenwriting award for Simon Barry.
Acting trophies in the drama category went to Louis Ferreira for the Motive episode “Fallen Angel” and Carmen Moore for Blackstone‘s “Still My Kid” in the best lead performance category, while supporting nods went to Lexa Doig for Continuum and Swo-Wo Gabriel for Blackstone.
The best feature honours went to James Brown, Ben Ratner, Andrew Halliwell and Jack Ong for Down River and best acting trophies in the category went to Jaren Brandt Bartlett for If I Had Wings and Lauren Lee Smith for Cinemanovels. Down River also took home trophies for sound (Randy Kiss, Michael Mcdonald, Brian Lyster), costume (Gloria Tsui), screenwriting (Ratner) and best supporting actress (Jennifer Spence).
Best MOW went to Mr. Hockey: The Gordie Howe Story (producers Howard Baldwin, Karen Baldwin, Shawn Williamson, Stephen Hegyes, Ian Dimmerman, William J. Immerman, Mike Ilitch Jr., Brendon Sawatsky and Brendan Ferguson) and best doc went to Emergency Room: Life and Death at VGH.
Lark Productions’ Emergency Room also went home with a People’s Choice Award for favourite shot-in-B.C. TV show, an honour that went to Iron Man 3 on the film side.
And short film Anxious Oswald Greene won the hearts of Leo voters, almost sweeping the short drama category and taking home 13 trophies.
Other trophies awarded throughout the three-day affair at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver included:
Best Visual Effects (Drama): Supernatural “Sacrifice” (Mark Meloche, Grant Lindsay, Christopher Richardson, Trevor Chong, Kevin Genzel)
Best Visual Effects (Feature Film): Elysium (Peter Muyzers, Shawn Walsh, Andrew Chapman, Cabral Rock)
Best Cinematography (Feature Film): 3 Days in Havana (Peter Stathis)
Best Music, Comedy or Variety Program or Series: Package Deal (Tim Gamble, Michael Shepard, Andrew Orenstein, Alexandra Raffé, S. Lily Hui)
Best Animation Program or Series: Mighty Mighty Monsters in New Fears Eve (Aaron L. Gilbert, Barbara Zelinski)
Best Youth or Children’s Program or Series: Spookesville (Harvey Kahn, Allen Lewis, Christopher Pike, Jillian Share, Gary Shaw, Jane Startz)
Best Information or Lifestyle Series: Playground (Adam Schelle, Kev Holloway)
Best Web Series: The True Heroines (Jovanna Huguet, Michelle Ouellet, Fiona Vroom, Paula Giroday, Andrew Burke, Nicholas Carella, Joel Sturrock, Nicholas Simon, Lawra Robertson)
