Canadians busy debuting and dealing films in Cannes

The first half of the Cannes Film Festival has seen critics applaud David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars, and pan Atom Egoyan’s The Captive, both of which screened in competition.

But away from the festival, Canadians have been busy at the film market on the Croisette.

After screening WolfCop to Cannes buyers, sales agent Raven Banner Entertainment and producer CineCoup said they will finance and shop a movie sequel to foreign buyers.

WolfCop 2 will be produced this fall, with Lowell Dean to direct.

News of the sequel comes as the original WolfCop film opens in theatres across Canada on June 6.

Also on the distribution front, Remstar Films and Elevation Pictures picked up the Canadian rights to Michel Hazanavicius’ The Search, the follow-up to the Oscar-winning The Artist.

And Vagrant Films Releasing and Sidecar Productions will jointly release Ian Thorpe’s Eternity: The Movie  in North America.

The partnering distributors plan a fall 2014 theatrical release for the Myko Olivier and Barrett Crake-starring film.

Also in Cannes, Phase 4 Films said it acquired the North American rights to writer/director Claudia Myers’ Fort Bliss, with a fall 2014 theatrical release planned.

And Double Dutch International sold the North American rights to Michael Bartlett’s House of Last Things to Revolver.

Double Dutch also sold the thriller to Signature Entertainment in the U.K. and MiG in Germany.
