Sarah Polley nominated for Writers Guild of America award

Toronto-based filmmaker Sarah Polley is looking at a strong start to 2014, after pulling in a Writers Guild Awards nomination from the Writers Guild of America and an appointment to the Order of Canada.

Polley’s documentary Stories We Tell has been nominated for a 2014 Writers Guild Award in the documentary screenplay category. The WGAs honour writers in original and adapted screenplays as well as documentaries.

The film, distributed by Mongrel Media in Canada and Roadside Attractions in the U.S., is Polley’s first feature-length documentary.

Stories We Tell was one of four projects in the inaugural CFC/NFB Feature Documentary Program, which was launched in 2009.

The documentary was produced by Anita Lee of the NFB, and executive produced by Silva Basmajian.

Polley was also one of 25 Canadians appointed as an officer of the Order of Canada on Dec. 30, 2013 for “her contributions to Canadian cinema and television as an actor, writer and director,” the Governor General’s office said in a statement.
