Bolstered by last year’s strong showing at the inaugural ceremony, comedy icon Martin Short is back to host the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards.
“I’m thrilled to be back hosting the Canadian Screen Awards. Actually it’s more than a thrill, it’s a contractual obligation,” quipped Short in a statement.
The CSAs, which honour the best in film, television and digital media, will be broadcast live from the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto on CBC-TV on Sunday, March 9.
“We are eager to see what Martin Short has in store for us at this year’s awards, as we celebrate the best in Canadian talent,” said Jennifer Dettman, executive director of the CBC’s Studio and Unscripted Content. “Last year he pulled out all the stops, making the inaugural Canadian Screen Awards an unforgettable night. He is such a renowned entertainer, and we are honoured to have him as our host for the second year in a row.”
An alumnus of both SCTV and Saturday Night Live, Hamilton, Ontario native Short has starred in his own television series and specials, the hit films The Three Amigos and Father of The Bride, and has won Emmy-nominated critical acclaim in his dramatic TV role in the American legal thriller Damages. Short, whose next role is as John Mulaney’s on the Fox sitcom Mulaney, also won a Tony Award for his performance in the Broadway Revival of Little Me.
In related news, the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television (ACCT) announced it will be celebrating 65 years of awards honouring Canadian screen stars on both sides of the camera.
“The Academy is building a legacy to honour Canada’s remarkable screen talent,” said Academy Chair Martin Katz in a statement. “It all began in 1949 with the Canadian Film Awards and prestigious hosts such as silver screen star Mary Pickford and Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent. We think this well-kept secret is worth sharing with all Canadians.”
The Academy intends to fete this landmark both at the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards and throughout Canadian Screen Week (March 3-9).
