As Rogers Media gets set to launch its FXX Canada channel in early 2014, U.S. cable partner FX is deepening its roots in Canada.
Guillermo del Toro’s drama pilot The Strain, shot in Toronto, has now received a 13-episode order.
Lake Ontario will figure large in the shoot for The Strain, a modern take on the vampire myth, aside from extensive soundstage shooting at Pinewood Toronto Studios.
Del Toro also shot Pacific Rim for Legendary Pictures at Pinewood Toronto Studios.
The Strain, a vampire drama from del Toro, Chuck Hogan and Carlton Cuse, is to bow in July 2014, with Cuse as showrunner.
And the TV adaptation for FX of Fargo, based on the Coen Brother’s 1996 Oscar-winning movie Fargo and coming from MGM Television, is set to start shooting 10 episodes in Calgary, tapping local locations and subsidies.
Rogers Media, which launched FX Canada in October 2011, recently unveiled a supply deal with FX Productions to take its original series slate for the Canadian market.
The Strain will be added to the expanding FX programming slate that includes the anthology series American Horror Story, The Americans, The Bridge, Justified and Sons of Anarchy.
