NFB announces retirement of Silva Basmajian

The National Film Board of Canada has announced the retirement of Silva Basmajian, a long-time editor, producer and executive producer of the Ontario Studio, after more than 30 years with the board.

Since 2004, Basmajian has overseen English-language production at the Toronto facility, said to be Canada’s largest English-language studio. She has been producer or co-producer of more than 80 films that have screened at international festivals such as Berlin, Toronto and Sundance, and garnered awards such as the International Emmys, the Genies, the Geminis, the Peabody Award, and the Canadian Screen Awards.

Basmajian has supported original documentary projects such as the NFB Filmmaker-in-Residence at St. Michael’s Hospital as well as what’s thought to be the first North American interactive dramatic feature film, Late Fragment, coproduced with the CFC. Her most recent films include Sarah Polley’s Stories We Tell and John Kastner’s NCR: Not Criminally Responsible.

Basmajian is a recipient of the Women in Film and Television (WIFT) Outstanding Achievement Award and the Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee Medal (2002).
