An additional $20,000 is up for grabs at this year’s Hot Docs film festival, with the Toronto event adding to its Don Haig Award and Audience Award pots.
The new funding bring the total awards amount up to $81,000. Revamped for its 10th year, the festival’s Don Haig Award – which is supported by Canadian channel Documentary – will be given to an outstanding Canadian indie producer with a feature-length film in the festival. The winning producer will be announced on April 29 and presented the award by the Hot Docs board of directors on May 3, receiving a $10,000 cash prize.
The award honors creative vision and entrepreneurship, as well as a track record of mentoring up-and-coming Canadian filmmakers.
Meanwhile, an estimated $10,000 in cash prizes will be given to the winner of the Hot Docs Audience Award, sponsored by Netflix, and the top two runners-up. The winners will be named once the festival has wrapped on May 5.
Ahead of the fest, Hot Docs’ crowd-funding service Doc Ignite will launch the Hot Docs Audience Award campaign, giving audience members and industry delegates the opportunity to pitch in towards the cash prize for the Audience Award winner and two runner-up films. With a goal of $10,000, the campaign aims to give all funds raised to the directors of the top three films.
