Documentaries from Harold Crooks, Rob Stewart and Thomas Burstyn have received investment from Telefilm Canada and the Rogers Group of Funds as part of the latest theatrical documentary program funding.

In all, seven selected docs received production or post-production coin.

“The documentaries selected stand out for their social relevance and original treatment of sensitive and complex issues,” said Telefilm exec director Carolle Brabant in a statement.

Among the English-language projects selected are The Reluctant Yogi, written and directed by Sebastian Lange and produced by Montreal-based Bunbury Films. KinoSmith will distribute the film in Canada.

Also receiving funding is shark war doc Revolution, from writer-director Rob Stewart. The film is produced by Big Screen Entertainment and distributed by D Films.

Thomas Burstyn’s Some Kind of Love, produced by Screen Siren Pictures and distributed by Union Pictures and Drew Taylor’s Our Man in Tehran, written by Robert Wright and produced by Rhombus Media are also among the English-language project recipients.

French-language projects receiving funding are À la rescousse des zombies, written and directed by Joseph Hillel and produced by Ciné Qua Non Média, and La Face cachée de l’impôt, from writer-director Harold Crooks and producer InformAction. The film is distributed by Filmoption International.

And Bidonville, from writer-director Jean-Nicolas Orhom and produced by Films Camera Oscura, was also selected in the latest round of the Theatrical Documentary Program. The doc is distributed by Les Films du 3 mars.

The goal of the Theatrical Documentary Program is to broaden the range of Canadian feature-length documentaries for theatrical distribution in Canada, and to jointly fund English- and French-language projects with domestic and international appeal.
