Feature film Step Dogs, produced by Vancouver-based Joker Films in association with Trilight Entertainment, will begin production on Nov. 29 in Saskatchewan.
The family film about two very different dogs – one farm-bred and one from the big city – who become step-siblings, is produced by Joker Film’s Tim Brown, with Trilight’s Holly Baird and Shayne Putzlocher, and Geoff Anderson directing.
The film featuring two talking dogs has already been pre-sold by Joker Films in a host of territories, including Canada, the U.S., Eastern Europe, Russia Australia/NZ, Spain, France, Turkey, Indonesia, and Latin America.
Brown, who previously shot Vampire Dog in Saskatchewan, said that while he’s excited to be working again in the province, “I’m very disappointed, however, to not be able to shoot here again after the province’s withdrawal of support for the film industry.”
The Saskatchewan film and TV industry has been rallying against the provincial government since it earlier this year cut the province’s refundable tax credit.
Sales agency Joker Films recently launched a production arm focusing on family films with an emphasis on talking animals.
Step Dogs is Joker Films’ second feature. The first, Vampire Dog, starred Collin MacKechnie, Amy Matysio and Julia Sarah Stone, and featured the voice of Norm MacDonald.
