To bring together video game and digital media startups in Toronto, George Brown College is launching more classroom space and a new incubator this fall.
The facility in downtown Toronto is currently under construction and slated for a September opening.
In addition to the student spaces, there will be 10 offices for startups and small companies and tenants will have access to the school’s newest technology and equipment. George Brown students will also have the opportunity to offer paid services to the startups.
“The research we conducted on the feasibility of a video gaming incubator reveals a real need for more applied research and innovation,” said George Brown president Anne Sado in a statement.
“With the growth rate in the gaming sector in Ontario predicted to reach 31% over the next three years, according to the Entertainment Software Association of Canada, George Brown College is in a perfect position to provide a leadership role in nurturing the talent in this industry.”
The feasibility study by George Brown was funded by the OMDC and City of Toronto, and revealed both a need for office space in the sector, as well as applied research and field placement opps for students.
“We felt it was important to fund this research that added to our understanding of the needs of the video gaming community,” said OMDC president and CEO Karen Thorne-Stone in a statement.
“We are excited that George Brown College has taken a leadership role in addressing the study’s recommendations. This will enhance the vibrancy of the video gaming cluster in Ontario.”
George Brown has added more than 300 students to its video game design and development programs over the last three years. New technologies, including dev kits for major game consoles, handheld devices, peripherals and a 3D scanner and printer, will be available shortly after the launch.
The George Brown School of Design is also taking on the leadership of Digifest, a Toronto-based international festival that celebrates innovation and digital creativity. It will run from October 26 to 30 and will be held in locations throughout the city. For more information, click here.
