King’s Speech reigns atop Canadian box office

Top film prizes and Oscar nominations have The King’s Speech reigning atop the Canadian box office.

After eight weeks on release, Alliance Films’ Speech rules the local multiplex with $10.5 million in box office receipts to date, the indie distributor said Monday.

The period drama took in $1.5 million alone over the weekend.

Since being named the audience award winner at the 35th Toronto International Film Festival last September, the period drama about a tongue-tied British monarch has won a slew of awards for film lead Colin Firth, director Tom Hooper and screenwriter David Seidler.

The latest bling came Sunday night when Firth picked up the top acting award at the Screen Actors Guild awards.

Earlier, Hooper took the top director award at the Directors Guild of American Awards.
